Finding Organic Non GMO Supplements

By Colette Foreman

Without the safety of genetically-modified organisms being established by long-term research, many consumers are avoiding them in their food. However, they may not have considered the wisdom of choosing organic non GMO supplements as well. Many nutrients that make up vitamin and mineral formulas actually come from food; with the growing number of bio-engineered plants and animals, screening everything meant to enhance health may be helpful.

Most consumers don't have either the knowledge or the time to investigate on their own. Fortunately, there's a quick way to feel confident. This is in trusting the 'organic' certification of a supplement. Just as with food, this assurance tells the consumer that there are no GMOs in the product. There are only a few companies that produce this kind of food-based and food-quality nutritional aids.

Although there are not many producers, the ones that do offer products made from food that is organically grown and processed offer a full range of products. Consumers should not feel limited, since they should be able to get all that they need. Both single nutrients and multi-vitamin and mineral formulas are marketed.

Another way to make sure of getting highest-quality, pure, and completely natural products is to buy from companies that promise to use only carefully-selected and independently-tested raw materials in their formulas. The company that pledges this kind of care should have third-party certification and an excellent rating in the industry. All reputable manufacturers will have toll free numbers and be glad to answer any questions consumer may raise.

Usually a GMO-free logo will be displayed on the label of any product that can legally do so. This is not a mandatory procedure, but companies know that consumers are looking for this kind of reassurance. There is a movement to require any product with genetically-modified content to so state on the packaging, but this has proved difficult to get passed by states or on the national level.

Another thing to remember is that not all companies make their products from their own raw materials. When some or all of the ingredients are obtained from outside sources, making sure of purity gets harder. Again, the best guarantee is the integrity of the manufacturer. There are many fine, reputable companies that take extraordinary care to insure that their products are pure, safe, and effective.

Even though the amounts of any substance in supplementary form are small, they can be dangerous. In addition, they are often expensive. Consumers should be able to trust that they will get exactly what they pay for, in the amounts stated on the product label, and in a form that is bio-available (usable by the human system) and all-natural.

No one really knows what genetically-modified organisms do to the environment or to people and animals. There are grounds to fear that bio-engineered crops may be harmful to pollinators like bees and butterflies. Consumers who want to get the purest and healthiest products need to take care when buying supplements. Checking out the company of origin and reading the labels of all products is a good start.
